City of Danbury to Conduct Emergency Response Drill & Flu Clinic on Oct. 5, 2019

DANBURY,CT—The Health Department in Danbury City Hall is conducting an emergency response exercise on Sat October 5th 9:30 a.m. – 1p.m. at Rogers Park Middle School.  This exercise will be open to the public and we are looking for volunteers to take part in this drill.  The purpose of this exercise is to assist our department in planning and preparing for future emergency events in our city.

Also at this event, we are offering a walk-in flu clinic which is at no cost to the patient.

#DanburyCT Traffic Alert: Incident on Lake Ave.

DANBURY, CT — Western Connecticut State University alerted its students via Twitter to avoid Lake Ave. and Lake Ave. Ext. as there has been a dangerous spill o the road in front of Stanziato’s Pizza.

(1/2) A truck has spilled a load of 1,000 pounds of roofing nails in front of Stanziato’s Restaurant on Lake Ave. Extension near the entrance to the Westside campus.

(2/2) Please avoid taking Lake Ave. Extension to get to Westside. Instead, take Kenosia Ave. or approach from Exit 2. The campus remains open and all classes and other activities are continuing.”

Roofing nails can cause damage to tires causing a dangerous driving situation. “Driving with a hole in your tire is potentially dangerous and could cause a blowout. Furthermore, driving too long with the nail can ruin the tire so you will have to replace the entire tire, instead of having a small piece plugged,” according to Autoblog.

VOTE: City of Danbury, Jericho Partnership Need Help to Fight Homelessness

DANBURY, CT —  The City of Danbury and the Jericho Partnership are joining forces to help combat homelessness and they need your help to qualify for a $25,000 grant to fulfill their mission. The two organizations are presenting the project called “CityServe” to increase the number of participants in Project CleanStart (PCS), expand the number of students impacted by Reading Buddies Program (RBP), and increase services offered by Spring Street Neighborhood Center (SSNC), according to their website.

Jericho is a finalist to win one of 40 grants with 200 organizations in the running. Funds will be used to enable team leaders to work directly with the homeless population and present the “Reading Buddies” program to several Danbury public schools. If awarded the grant, they will be able to expand their impact in elementary schools, increase food pantry distributions, help shut-ins and the elderly population, and offering free case management for families in need.

New Fairfield & Danbury Hibernians Host St. Patrick’s Day Event: Saturday, March 10, 2018

NEW FAIRFIELD, CT — The Greater Danbury Irish Cultural Center (GDICC) is hosting a number of events in the Greater Danbury area leading up to, and beyond St. Patrick’s Day 2018 and invite you to join the fun.

On Saturday, March 10, 2018, the GDICC will host an event in New Fairfield, a 9:00 a.m. Mass at St. Edwards Church, followed by a procession to the Library for refreshments, led by Irish bagpiper, Peter Hearty.

On St. Patrick’s Day the GDICC will host several activities in Bethel and Danbury.  There will be a flag raising in Bethel at P.T. Barnum Square at 9 a.m. on Saturday, March 17, 2018. At 11 a.m. on the same day, there will be a Mass at St. Peter Church, Main St. in Danbury. Following the Mass, there will be a flag raising at Danbury City Hall on West St. at 12 p.m.

Following the Mass and flag raising on Saturday, March 17, the Greater Danbury Irish Cultural Center will serve corned beef and cabbage beginning at 12:30 p.m. at the Greater Danbury Irish Cultural Center, 6 Lake Ave., Danbury. At 1:00 p. m., the Thorne School of Irish Dance will perform, followed by Newtown-based Ashurst Academy Of Irish Dance at 3:00 p.m. From 4:30 to 7:30 p.m., a Bethel-based all-female Irish band, Chicks ‘n Sync will play, followed by Steve O’Tree from 8:00 – 11:00 p.m.

The 19th Annual Greater Danbury Parade will be held on Sunday, March 25, 2018 in downtown Danbury. Step off is at 3 p.m. in front of St. Peter Church on Main St. in Danbury. The parade route continues down Main, goes left of West St., on to Lake Ave. and ends at the Irish Club, 6 Lake Ave. in Danbury, where there will be Irish music, dance, corned beef, cabbage, Irish soda bread and refreshments.

What’s the Buzz, CT?

 

Hey there! Wendy Mitchell here— mom of three, writer, editor, musician, wife, rescue pup mama, breast cancer survivor. After battling the evil “C word” for the past three years, I’m happy to report that I’m now 100% cancer free and ready to announce the (re)launch of sorts of my CT Buzz family of news sites. Why is it a relaunch? Because I originally launched Bethel Buzz news site in June of 2011 and soon after added New Fairfield and Sherman Buzz. After several years, I went on to work as Regional Editor for a national news website from 2010-2012.

During 2012-2013, I stopped working in order to serve as a volunteer to help my hometown of Sandy Hook heal after the tragic Sandy Hook School shootings on Dec. 14, 2012. I founded the Sandy Hook Arts Center for Kids (The SHACK) in Sandy Hook Center as a creative way for kids and families to heal through the power of the arts through free music and art programs. We were happy to have the Newtown Strong Therapy Dogs as regular visitors.

In January of 2014, Hearst Media Services honored me as one of the “Top 10 Most Fascinating People of 2013” award in the Greater Danbury Area for volunteer work I performed with Sandy Hook Arts Center for Kids.

February 4, 2015, is a day I won’t ever forget. It was the day life threw me a major curveball and I found out I had a rare and aggressive type of breast cancer called Metaplastic Carcinoma, only found in 1% of women diagnosed. After four months of dose dense “red devil” chemo, 30 rounds of radiation, five surgeries and tons of complications, I’m happy to be cancer free after a three-year-long fight and continue to work to raise awareness for self breast exams for early detection.
